The Relaxation Project: Don't like it.

I hate to be the stick in the mud of the group but I'm not much on this type of relaxation technique.  This is the same audio that was in the Managing Stress class.  It's really hard for me to listen to another guy telling me what to do and relax.  It's just not in me.  I am a more sight and sound (in reality, not technologically) oriented person.  Hope not liking the audio presentation does not affect my grade.

  1. Find your path...Remember that the purpose of the ccourse is to "explore" what works and what doesnt work for us. So you now know you dont care too much for guided meditation... Walking on the beach is cool! I prefer that over guided medication (oops!) meditation too...lol. Anyway I just think it is something to experience.

I also love your site too. I just want to hang out here:-)

  2. What would happen if a woman would guide your meditation?? Would that change anything? Seriously. I think it also depends on what is said - I have a hard time with people telling me to imagine a beach...everybody's happy place aparently, but for me it is nothing but stress and hot! I like mountain lakes for peace purposes. The only thing I love at the beach is listening to the water! That is amazing. It is a long path to find what works for one, but once you find something it is great. A friend of mine told me he meditates while he is riding his bike. So you see, there doesn't have to be close your eyes and be still - although this is a special kind of peace one finds during that. Good luck!

  3. I also have a hard time with mental imagery, but I do like the guided meditation. I can't say that when the guy mentioned not being able to lift your hands because they would feel too heavy that that was true for me, but I'm sure it takes practice. The part that I like about the guided meditation is the calming effect of the speakers voice.

  4. Mack,

You are not alone in this one. I actually had anxiety that I was going to cause harm to myself by redirecting my blood flow this way.

As for not being able to move my arms, well I could and I did and that was also partly out of fear and determination. I do NOT like to feel paralyzed and helpless. I have far too many nightmares about that, especially lately.

However, I do have to admit that my arms are not as tense now as they were before the exercise.

  5. Mack,

Throw a massage table and tent on that beach and a well trained massage therapist and I think we'll have the all the requirements for truly relaxing:)

I say that, but when I was celebrating my 1st anniversary with my wife in Maui, there were folks getting massages out by the beach. I know this because I was walking by them while talking with my wife. I don't know about you, but if I was paying over a hundred bucks for a massage, I might want to enjoy the beach, the sound of the ocean and a great massage WITHOUT total strangers walking by and staring at me:)

I'm enjoying your approach to these blogs:)
